What is Laughter Yoga?

Breathe, Stretch & Laugh Your Way to Better Health!

Laughter Yoga Sessions include deep yogic breathing and stretching with movement, clapping and laughter exercises. There are no jokes. Carmela will guide the group with techniques to bypass intellectual barriers and inspire contagious laughter and playfulness. Sessions end with a short restorative relaxation, an opportunity for discussion, and suggestions for practicing laughter yoga alone.

Laughter Yoga is powerful and scientific research all over the world proves it. One minute of mirthful laughter is the cardiac equivalent of nine minutes on a rowing machine and it is much more fun!

Carmela adapts Laughter Yoga for hundreds of people in auditoriums at professional conferences, for more active groups including work on the mat at yoga and fitness studios, for stress managment and team-building in the workplace with exercises done seated and standing in professional work attire, as well as arm chair sessions for people with health challenges.

The secret to laughter yoga's success is that humans are hardwired with powerful natural reactions to extended hearty laughter and the benefits are felt immediately. Laughter Yoga guides us to shifting to the parasympathetic nervous system for stress relief. Our bodies cannot tell the difference between real or simulated laughter. When we practice extended laughter exercises, we get all of these proven benefits:

  • Blood & all major organs are fully oxygenated.
  • Boosted endorphin levels reduced aches, pains & depression.
  • Blood pressure & blood pressure & pulse rate drop & circulation improves.
  • Immune, digestive & cardiac systems are stimulated.
  • Stress levels (cortisol) reduced by as much as 75%.
  • Stretching lengthens, relaxes and strengthens your muscles.
  • Laughing together creates community connection amongst groups.

Dr. Madan Kataria, M.D.
Creator of Laughter Yoga

Brief History of Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga was created by Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian medical doctor.
In the early 1990's he ran a private practice and wrote papers for medical
journals. In his scholarly work he became interested in the growing body of scientific evidence showing that laughter is extremely beneficial to mental and physical health. He and his wife, Madhuri, a yoga teacher, integrated yoga breathing, stretches, clapping and laughter exercises to create Laughter Yoga. They started a small group in 1995 and there are now Laughter Yoga Clubs in 53 62 countries with thousands of people laughing for better health around the world everyday. Visit www.laughteryoga.org for more information.
